Detailed technical review and functionality of the legendary tBeacon Green radio detection board

The tBeacon Green search and rescue beacon is a time-tested, reliable and balanced engineering solution for pilots, developers and volunteers looking for the perfect balance between extensive functionality and ultra-lightweight components.

Thanks to its record-breaking low weight (only 5–6 grams when assembled with a lightweight battery), this emergency beacon is absolutely indispensable for integration on board compact civilian multicopters, gliders, weather probes, and model aircraft, where every gram critically affects the overall flight characteristics of the device.

Key features of the wireless circuit and radio communication:

  • Voice Telemetry Broadcast: The search beacon broadcasts precise satellite coordinates directly to your standard VHF radio in a clear human voice. You don’t need complicated digital decoders—the operator simply receives the coordinates by ear.
  • Remote activation on demand: Call the beacon transmitter remotely by pressing a button on the walkie-talkie or set it to start automatically with the built-in internal safety timer.
  • Proximity Mode (Digital Radio Direction Finding): A unique algorithm that allows the operator to accurately locate an object even with a critically weak signal in the search area, using modern engineering principles of classic “fox hunting”.
  • Integration with satellite systems: The electronic module receives navigation data from your model’s onboard or dedicated external GPS/GNSS receiver, ensuring maximum accuracy in fixing the final location point.

Technological features and light and sound complex:

  • On-board network voltage monitoring: A built-in engineering sensor allows the radio beacon to broadcast the current voltage of your running battery (full support for power assemblies up to and including 6S Li-Po), which works as additional interference-resistant flight telemetry.
  • Light and sound emergency indication: At the final stage of searching for an object in thick grass, bushes or a forest strip, the operator will be helped by a built-in high-power LED beacon and a loud sound siren (buzzer).
  • High energy efficiency: Its own backup Li-Po battery with a capacity of 180 mAh provides more than 7 days of continuous battery life in call standby mode.

Engineering compactness, assembly and board preparation:

  • Subminiature dimensions: The minimalist hardware design of the PCB measuring only 20×30 mm allows the module to be easily integrated into the tightest compartments.
  • Direct configuration: Convenient changing of service timers and calibration of frequency parameters are carried out through the intuitive official “Configurator” application for PC.
  • Mechanical control: The presence of a securely soldered physical power switch on the board ensures convenience and complete safety of the system during long-term storage and transportation.

The standard engineering package includes:

  • tBeacon Green radio tracking PCB with a wire antenna;
  • Reinforced autonomous Li-Po battery with a capacity of 180 mAh;
  • Low-temperature dielectric heat shrink tubing;
  • Special switching cable for quick engineering integration of the board with an external GPS module and an on-board 5V power line;
  • Information accompanying insert with service QR code;

Engineering preparation, sealing and security of the wireless circuit:

To ensure that the electronic module is guaranteed to withstand a hard landing, extreme collision of the device, or adverse weather conditions, strictly follow the manufacturer’s technical regulations:

  • Waterproofing and sealing the board: We strongly recommend treating the search beacon’s printed circuit board with a specialized dielectric insulating varnish or “liquid insulating tape.” Important: when varnishing, strictly avoid getting the mixture inside the mechanical switch, interface connector, and the acoustic hole of the sound buzzer (siren).
  • Spatial mounting safety: Choose the location of the board so that in the event of an accident, the emergency beacon will not be crushed or damaged by the model’s heavy running battery. Avoid mounting under solid metal or carbon parts that shield the radio signal.
  • Automatic in-flight charging: The electronic module automatically recharges its own backup battery from the general on-board DC network (5-6V) directly during flight or during commissioning.

⚠️ Strict technical safety rules:
When performing any service manipulations with the radio detection board, it is strictly forbidden to use metal uninsulated tools or conductive objects! Remember: a charged, strong Li-Po battery is connected to the open tracks of the printed circuit board! A short circuit (SC) will lead to instant failure of the components.

Intelligent power monitoring and control system:

The tBeacon Green radio beacon is equipped with an advanced engineering system for monitoring the voltage of both its own battery and the model’s power (running) battery. This allows the operator to receive up-to-date telemetry in real time directly on the air of the Baofeng radio.

Controlling the beacon board’s own power supply:

  • An intelligent safety system automatically blocks the transmitter from starting if the voltage of its own backup battery drops below 3.0V.
  • In this case, the board goes into “delayed start” mode (informing the operator with short red LED flashes) until the voltage rises to a safe level of 3.3V.
  • During normal startup, the radio beacon informs about its current charge with a voice message (for example, the phrase “three eight” generated by the module means the exact voltage of its own battery, 3.8V).

Monitoring the model’s running battery (Vext Function):
If the engineering parameter “External battery thresholds” is activated in the configurator, the emergency beacon automatically analyzes the state of the civil vehicle’s power battery:

  • Auto-detection of cells: When connecting the common on-board power supply, the beacon independently determines the number of cells (S) of the Li-Po battery and confirms this with the corresponding number of sound signals (for example, three “beeps” for a 3S battery).
  • Voices of can telemetry: The beacon reports the average calculated voltage for each individual can over the air (the phrase “cell four two” means 4.2V for each can).
  • “Warning” mode: When the set threshold is reached, the beacon dictates the voltage to the radio every 15 seconds.
  • “Critical” mode: When the voltage drops to a critical level, messages are sounded every second, a light alarm is activated, and an audible siren is forcibly turned on.
  • Recommended parameter setting: “3533” (warning is activated at 3.5V, alarm at 3.3V on the Li-Po bank).

*Note: Active use of the Vext monitoring feature increases current consumption, so we strongly recommend connecting the board to the onboard 5V DC power source for continuous automatic recharging during flight.

Pinout, connection interfaces and switching with a PC:

For reliable switching of the printed circuit board with an external GPS module, on-board power lines and PC, a universal 5-pin interface connector is used. The basic delivery set already includes a proprietary plug with a cable for subsequent soldering.

Engineering pinout table of the Green board interface connector:

ContactAppointmentFunctional description
VextBattery monitoringConnects to the “plus” of the power battery (2-6S).
RXUART inputTo obtain GPS coordinates or connect to a PC.
TXUART outputUsed exclusively for configuration via PC.
+5VPower / ChargingInput for recharging the built-in battery of the beacon.
GNDTotal (Minus)Common “ground” for all connections.

Software, configurator, and firmware updates:

The Green version of the radio detection board has a simplified connection scheme, which allows you to use any standard external USB-UART adapter, even without a DTR line output, for configuration, changing timers, and updating software.

Circuit diagram for connecting the printed circuit board to the computer:
For correct connection to the PC, a 3-pin circuit is used (note the mandatory cross-connection of data lines):

  • <—>GND of the beacon GND of the external adapter
  • <—>Beacon RX External adapter TX (Input to Output)
  • <—>TX beacon RX external adapter (Output to Input)

Configuring parameters via the Configurator utility:
To change service timers, adjust Baofeng radio frequencies, or perform precise calibration of the search beacon transmitter:

Immediately after that, turn on the board’s power using the physical switch on the PCB. This will allow the software to instantly intercept the microcontroller’s bootloader.

Run the service configurator program on your PC.

Press the “CONNECT” button.
